Tour Stops (8)

1

Brühl's Terrace

Brühl’s Terrace is where Dresden first really earns its nickname as a city of river views. Opened to the public in 1814, this long neoclassical promenade runs above the Elbe like a stone balcony, which is exactly why people still call it the “Balcony of Europe.” From here, the skyline opens up in a very Dresden way: th…

2

Albertinum (1884-87; Adolph Canzler)

Right after the open sweep of Brühl’s Terrace, the Albertinum gives you a different kind of riverside landmark: less promenade, more statement building. What you see here is the former armory turned museum, sitting just back from the Elbe-facing edge of the old town, with a long sandstone façade that was given its curr…

3

Augustus Bridge

Augustus Bridge is one of the most important pieces in Dresden’s riverside skyline because it does something very practical and very scenic at the same time: it links the old town with the Neustadt while giving you one of the cleanest views across the Elbe. The bridge we see today dates from 1907 to 1910, when the old …

Canaletto-Blick

From here on the Augustus Bridge, you’re standing close to the viewpoint that gave Dresden one of its most famous images: the Canaletto-Blick. The name comes from Bernardo Bellotto, who painted this view in 1748 and signed himself “Canaletto,” after his uncle and teacher. He had been brought to Dresden in 1747 by Augus…

5

Königsufer | Landschaftsschutzgebiet Neustädter Elbufer

From here you can see why Dresden’s riverfront works so well as a skyline promenade: the Elbe opens up, the old town sits across the water, and this north-bank stretch becomes a broad, landscaped foreground for the city’s most famous views. We’ve crossed from the tighter framing at Canaletto-Blick into a more open rive…

Golden Rider

At the center of the Neustädter Markt stands Dresden’s most famous equestrian statue, the Goldener Reiter, or Golden Rider. It was modeled by the French court sculptor Jean Joseph Vinache, cast in copper by Ludwig Wiedemann, and erected in 1736 after work began in 1732. What you see here is the full Baroque statement: …

7

Königsufer Terrassen

The Königsufer Terrassen are part of the long riverside promenade laid out in the 1930s between the Marienbrücke and the Carolabrücke, when Dresden was trying to shape the Elbe bank as both a public walkway and a carefully designed green edge to the old town. From here, what you notice is not a single monument but a se…

8

Neue Terrasse

The Neue Terrasse is the quieter end of Dresden’s riverside promenade, but it still belongs to the same great stage set you’ve been walking along: the Elbe, the old town skyline, and the line of terraces that turn the riverbank into a public viewpoint. From here, what stands out is the openness of the space itself — a …
